“That’s It, I’m Craft Shaming”: 30 DIY Projects That Missed The Mark (New Pics)

Those who have been following We at least for a little while probably know that we have a weakness for hilariously bad DIY projects. Or rather, DiWHY. I guess that’s largely because anyone who struggles with their own creative endeavors, big or small, needs the reassurance that there’s someone worse than them in order to sleep at night.

And there’s a Facebook group that provides just that. It’s called ‘That’s it, I’m craft shaming,’ and even though this online community is just two years old, its 17K members have already collected plenty of eerie custom-made dolls, baked bean Christmas ornaments, and other things that you couldn’t even imagine. So for better or worse, continue scrolling to check out some of the group’s recent hot posts.

#1 Posting Anonymous So I Don’t Get Booted From The Group I Saw It In. Someone In The Comments Said “Why Does The After Photo Look Like The Before Pic?”. I Don’t Think The Husband Is Wrong Here

#2 Kinda Looks Like The Grinch

Just like the first time we covered ‘That’s it, I’m craft shaming,’ its admins and mods were kind enough to have a little chat with us.

What caught our eye this time is the fact that unlike many other similar groups, these folks keep it locked.

“We decided to remain private to discourage people from jumping in and bullying the crafters,” the team running the group told We. “It’s one thing to have a laugh and a joke but we don’t stand for abuse or bashing. We’re trying to see the fun side in the mistakes, not ridicule or belittle and we find this easier when the group is private, with each admin looking out for those who [want to join.]”

Contrary to what some internet trolls might think, this group isn’t about putting people down.

“Our goal, as always, is to bring light, laughter, and love to the crafting community,” the admins and mods of ‘That’s it, I’m craft shaming’ said.

“No one is perfect or infallible and even da Vinci, Monet, and van Gogh made mistakes. Admittedly, none of them tried to paint a sofa with wet chalk but still. We celebrate our mistakes as a part of life and in the hopes that when we make our masterpieces, we can look back on our humble beginnings and smile.”

Talking about keeping the group civil, the admins and mods said that “there’s a fair bit of continuously checking posts for comments but we approve main posts first to ensure they’re not offensive.”

“It’s one thing to accidentally make something anatomically comical but another to post something racially or culturally insensitive.”

There are a lot of different ways people end up being featured on the group, but some stand out more than others.

“We think that crochet is always hard. It’s such an incredible skill that takes years to perfect so those early works tend to be sloppy and bumpy,” the admins and mods of the group explained.

However, sometimes you can produce a bad project even if you have the craftmanship.

“We get a lot of home decor ideas that tend to be a bit… Not thought out, like art with live ammunition, ruining perfectly good furniture, and just stuff that’s not practical or comfy,” the team behind the group added.

However, people who take the creative path shouldn’t be discouraged by the bumps they face along the way. “We think anyone has the capability to practice and perfect a skill, whatever it is.”

“Taste, on the other hand, is so purely subjective. It’s impossible to say that one man’s trash… and all that jazz!”

And that’s ultimately the message that the group is trying to get across. Don’t be ashamed of your setbacks, they’re part of the process.
